Learn to hold sustainable sports events with the Green Team “Organising Sustainable & Inclusive Sports Events” online course!

Date

Sports events play a significant role in our society, from small, local-level activities to large-scale international competitions. However, their environmental impact is seldom considered, which is a change we must implement in our fight against climate change. This is why Green Team partners have worked with numerous stakeholders to elaborate this course, available in Catalan, English, French, German, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Portuguese, Romanian and Spanish, that will help you organise sustainable sporting events.

A common goal: acting at your level towards carbon neutrality

One of the main leverage points for action against the effects of climate change is reducing the carbon emissions we produce through our activities, whether it be at individual or structural level. This course focuses on providing sports event organisers, such as federations, confederations and administrations with concrete tools on how to act to limit the pollution created by their sports events, to reduce the impact of the sport sector on environmental changes but also tackles the social and economic implications of sustainability.

What’s in this online course?

By taking this course, you will learn how to:

  • incorporate sustainable practices tailored to your sports events to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations
  • Improve your organisation’s environmental impact while reducing costs
  • Join a global movement to reduce the environmental footprint of sports, promote social inclusivity, and enhance the economic viability of sports events
  • Earn a Sustainability Seal that confirms the commitment of your organisation to a greener future
  • Raise awareness of this issue among other stakeholders

All throughout the online course, you will have the opportunity to test out your knowledge with little tests and assess your progress thanks to our self-evaluation exercises. Further resources and examples will help you make your sports events the most sustainable and inclusive they can be.

What are sustainable sports events made of?

Through our 5 modules, you will learn what the Green Team partners consider key to organising sustainable sports events, which means:

MODULE 1

Introducing the basics of sustainability (as theorised by the United Nations) and how to create your sustainability baseline.

MODULE 2

The environmental pillar (what actions can be performed to avoid, or reduce, the environmental impact of you sport event regarding mobility, waste management, energy supply and energy savings, decoration and venue dressing, and nature preservation?)

MODULE 3

The social pillar (encompassing gender perspective & LGBTQIA+ inclusion, accessibility & inclusivity, culture & social benefits)

MODULE 4

The economic pillar (including economic procurement and local business engagement)

MODULE 5

Stakeholders and resources (with best practices, key publications, and networks)

By exploring the core pillars of sustainability and teaching you how to integrate them at every stage, from planning to execution, the Green Team online course aims at giving you a turnkey approach of the knowledge, skills and attitudes in the field of climate change and sustainable development, to highlight how easy elaborating your own sustainability plan can be.
